Central City

City Council

Ron Engels – Alderman

Alderman Engels is mid-way through serving his first term on City Council. Prior to his election in 2006, he served on the City’s Historic Preservation Commission. His interest in city governance and his passion for preserving Central City’s historic heritage began in 2000 when he and his husband, Zane Laubhan, purchased Harvey House on the Casey. After nearly a decade, the rehabilitation of their home the only private residence in the City on the State Register of Historic Places is nearly complete, giving him time to share the knowledge he gathered in that process.

Ron brings experience from a wide array of previous and current activities to City Council. He earned a B.A. in Journalism and in Spanish from the University of Iowa. He served a four year tour of duty with the U.S. Army, working in Signal Intelligence in Central America. He worked primarily in the not-for-profit sector, having hosting local Morning Edition broadcasts at a small Midwestern NPR affiliate for many years. He now works for the Denver Public School District, where he manages a team that integrates and analyzes data to help improve student performance.
